TMP FELLOWS - THE ANNUAL MEETING
It was extremely encouraging to see so many TMP Fellows in Edinburgh for this year’s annual meeting in March. We had representatives from all cohorts, with a particularly strong showing from TMP4. The annual meeting was preceded by a number of action learning meetings taking place in various corners of the Dalmahoy Hotel.

Feedback has been positive and the mix of focused discussions on themes such as ‘The Student Experience Post 2006’, ‘Top Team Structures’ and ‘International Strategies’ combined with a perspective from outside HE worked well. The external perspective this year was provided by Liz Lacovara, Learning Consultant of Brand Learning. Liz ran an interactive session on the theme of Brands and Brand Management. For those in the process of re-branding or considering doing so, the session helped demystify the terminology and the process and provided practical advice, particularly when appointing consultants to assist with brand development.

The value of discussions with colleagues within cohorts and – increasingly – between cohorts continues to be a real benefit of the Fellows Network. The event ended with a discussion of the ways in which the Network could be strengthened and a number of these suggestions are referred to below.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
23-24 March 2006
TMP Annual Meeting

We are aware that a number of you missed out on this year’s event because of diary clashes. We are therefore giving you early notice of the 2006 dates and venue: Thursday 23 March – Friday 24 March, The Dalmahoy Hotel, near Edinburgh.

If you have any ideas for subjects or activities at the 2006 Annual Meeting please contact the TMP Co-ordinator, Lara Faulkner on spam@lfhe.spam.

TMP 8, 9, 10 AND 11
The annual meeting also provided an opportunity to update colleagues about the ongoing success of the TMP. The programme continues to attract high quality candidates from across the UK. TMP8 started last month and TMP 9 and 10 will run from December 2005 and January 2006 consecutively. TMP 11 will start in September 2006. If you have colleagues who may wish to participate please encourage them to express interest at the earliest possible time since demand for places continues to be very competitive. Literature and booking forms can be found at www.lfhe.ac.uk/developing. The direct result of the increased participation in TMP is that the current membership of TMP Fellows is now in excess of 160, increasing by over 20% per annum.

PROPOSED TMP FELLOWS INITIATIVES
A number of very helpful suggestions were made at the most recent meeting (to add to those made by the Network Representatives) that could assist the growth and development of the Network. With the help and additional resources provided by the team at the Leadership Foundation we aim to progress these over the next 6 months.

COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES
During the summer months a dedicated web area will be created on the Leadership Foundation web site – www.lfhe.ac.uk. This secure area of the website will provide the opportunity for TMP Fellows to network and exchange ideas and information, as well as debate issues of interest. As you know, membership is based upon participation on the TMP and we will be in touch towards the end of the summer to confirm details of access to the area.

CROSS COHORT ACTION LEARNING
A number of individuals expressed interest in re-forming on a cross-cohort basis new action learning groups. We are very willing to facilitate the process and help with the formation of the new groups for the new academic year. As a basis for assessing the level of demand please register your interest by the end of September with Lara Faulkner spam@lfhe.spam.

ASHRIDGE VIRTUAL LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE
To complement other Networking activities we are considering establishing Special Interest Groups (SIGs) around themes identified by members. These will be cross cohort groups and initially be meetings planned as part of the annual event. Topics which might be of interest include;

  • Research Management
  • International Strategies
  • HR Issues
If you are interested in being involved please let Lara Faulkner know at spam@lfhe.spam, signaling the particular topic of interest to you.

ASHBRIDGE VIRTUAL LEARNING
A recent development for TMP Fellows has been to provide access to the Ashridge Virtual Learning Resource Centre (VLRC). This on-line facility offers access to a wealth of management and leadership resources. If you would like to access the site (www.ashridge.com/vlrc) please contact Lara who will provide you with a username and password. E: spam@lfhe.spam

COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION
A number of participants indicated that they were not as familiar with the work and offerings of the Leadership Foundation as they would wish. As a consequence the distribution database for all senior level programmes has been amended to ensure that TMP Fellows receive information about activities and programmes that may be of interest to them or the staff they manage. Leadership Foundation literature and information is also sent to a wide range of senior management team members in all the UK’s HE institutions.

CROSS SECTOR PROGRAMMES
A further strand of interest that emerged from the discussions at the annual event was cross-sector offerings. The Leadership Foundation is working on a number of initiatives in this area including;

Collaborative Programmes

The Strategic Collaboration Development Programme will begin in Autumn 2005 and will focus on the leadership challenges associated with the formation and on-going effectiveness of collaborative partnerships, strategic alliances and joint ventures. The new two strand programme will focus on both Research Collaboration and Business & Community Collaboration. You should already have received details, but if not please contact the Leadership Foundation marketing team at spam@lfhe.spam. The programme will involve active participation from colleagues
outside HE.

Strategic X-Change: Cross Sector Case Studies

Working in collaboration with the new National School of Government (formerly known as CMPS), part of the Cabinet Office, the Leadership Foundation is planning a new programme of ‘live case studies’. The model used within the Cabinet Office version of TMP offers the opportunity for a small group of senior managers (6-8) from one sector to engage in dialogue and internal consultancy to assist another organisation. Planning for this programme is underway and if you would like to be involved in a pilot programme please contact Lara spam@lfhe.spam.

INTERNATIONAL LEADER DEVELOPMENT
The opportunity to engage in highly tailored international development activities was a further area of interest.

There have been two themed international visits in the past six months, the first, last November, was exclusive to TMP Fellows, who visited New York to gain insights into access and widening participation practices.

The second trip took place this May, and was open to those involved in Fundraising and Development at the most senior levels. This trip, developed in collaboration with Case Europe visited Canada. If there is sufficient interest, a further fundraising visit (provisional dates 8-12 May) will be mounted in 2006.

A third visit, currently in the planning phase, is aimed at gaining perspectives on the potential transformational impact of information systems it is being developed jointly with the support of IBM and other technology companies. Provisionally this is scheduled to take place during 2006. If you would like to register your interest in the forthcoming visits please contact Lara
at spam@lfhe.spam.
